Dr. David RP Almeida (Canada)

Consultant Ophthalmologist & Vitreoretinal Surgeon

Dr. DAVID R.P. ALMEIDA, MD, MBA, PhD, FRCSC, DABO Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Clinician Scientist & Healthcare Innovator Dr. David R.P. Almeida is a board-certified ophthalmologist, vitreoretinal surgeon, clinician scientist, entrepreneur, and internationally recognized leader in retinal disease, clinical research, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine. He is the Founder and Investigator-in-Chief of Erie Retina Research, a clinical research organization conducting cutting-edge pharmaceutical and surgical ophthalmic clinical trials.

He is the Founder and Investigator-in-Chief of the Centers for Advanced Surgical Exploration (CASEx) Global, Co-Founder of ClinOmicsAI, and Founder and Executive Chairman of AlmeidaPHARMA Solutions – organizations dedicated to advancing ophthalmic therapeutics, clinical research, AI-driven healthcare technologies, and molecular diagnostics. Dr. Almeida earned an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Drug Research at the University of Szeged, graduating summa cum laude. He subsequently obtained his Doctor of Medicine from Queen’s University, completed residency training in Ophthalmology at Queen’s University, earned a Master of Business Administration from The George Washington University, and completed fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the University of Iowa, one of North America’s premier retina fellowships.

With more than fifteen years of experience in vitreoretinal surgery, Dr. Almeida has developed an international reputation for advancing the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disease through the integration of clinical excellence, translational science, molecular medicine, and artificial intelligence. His clinical expertise includes age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, inherited retinal diseases, retinal vascular disorders, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, complex retinal detachment surgery, ocular inflammation, and emerging gene and cell therapies.

Committed to transforming ophthalmic innovation, Dr. Almeida founded Erie Retina Research and CASEx to create a vertically integrated ecosystem that combines clinical practice, translational research, pharmaceutical development, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, precision diagnostics, and surgical innovation. Under his leadership, these organizations have become internationally recognized centers for retinal clinical research, innovation, and physician education.
As Principal Investigator, Dr. Almeida has led more than 140 Phase I-IV multicenter clinical trials evaluating gene therapies, anti-VEGF agents, complement inhibitors, corticosteroids, sustained drug-delivery systems, cell therapies, and novel pharmaceutical platforms. His current research portfolio includes 52 active clinical studies across nine international research sites, maintaining a 100% FDA audit success rate.

Dr. Almeida’s research focuses on precision medicine, proteomics, retinal imaging, artificial intelligence, biomarker discovery, gene therapy, ophthalmic drug delivery, surgical innovation, and diabetic retinal disease. His work seeks to redefine how retinal diseases are diagnosed, monitored, and treated through molecular characterization and AI-assisted clinical decision-making. He has pioneered several proprietary technology platforms that integrate artificial intelligence with ophthalmic care and clinical research. These include CASExTrials, an AI-powered platform for clinical trial optimization and site management; ClinOmicsAI, a precision proteomics platform capable of profiling more than 5,000 proteins to identify predictive biomarkers for retinal disease and therapeutic response; and SmartSource, a digital health platform designed to improve patient recruitment and trial efficiency. Beyond clinical research.

Dr. Almeida is an accomplished inventor with 12 issued United States patents covering surgical simulation technologies, artificial intelligence for clinical trial optimization, proteomics-based diagnostic platforms, tissue engineering, and novel ophthalmic surgical devices. His innovations include the Near-Real Surgical Specimen (NRSS) platform, AI-enhanced patient matching for clinical trials, and proteomics-based prediction models for treatment response in retinal disease. Dr. Almeida has authored more than 270 peer-reviewed scientific publications, contributed 15 textbook chapters, and published extensively in leading journals including Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Nature Scientific Reports. His scholarly work has accumulated an H-index of 42 and more than 8,500 citations, reflecting his broad impact on vitreoretinal surgery, retinal therapeutics, imaging, clinical trial methodology, and translational medicine; ORCID ID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1742-1683

An internationally recognized educator and speaker.
